PRO>ACTIVE PUBLICATIONS BOOK PROPOSAL
This questionnaire has been designed to elicit information about publishing a book that will be read (and purchased) by educators. Keys to that end are producing an attractive book and making it appealing to a specific audience. Hence the following focuses on the subject of your book, its benefits to readers (why they will want to buy it), the readers themselves, and the physical specifications of the manuscript.
The answers you provide will be used by Pro>Active's editorial, marketing, and production personnel to determine the match between the proposed book and prospective readers, as well as to estimate costs and scheduling. The proposal (or an outline you submit) may also be sent to independent reviewers. In submitting the proposal you are not relinquishing copyright to material contained in it. Any peer review of the proposal will be blind unless you instruct otherwise.
Please answer on a separate sheet(s) and include your name, address, telephone and/or fax numbers, and E-mail address.
1. Please list the suggested book title and chapter titles of the book, adding subdivisions where possible.
2. Summarize your reasons for writing the book, e.g., points you intend to make and professional needs you will address.
3. For whom is the book written? List the main readerships in order of importance. Describe the specific audience in terms of job function, profession, academic specialty, etc. Remember: Professional books are most successful when they address specific needs and job requirements of busy readers. The most successful books speak to real questions of real people.
4. If your book is designed to be, or can be, used as a text for university courses, list the names of such courses. Will you or other members of your academic department adopt the book?
5. What books similar to and possibly competitive with the proposed book are now in print in the English language? Where do people now go for information on the subject of your book? IMPORTANT: In what ways will your book be superior to others on the topic?
6. What kind and (approximately) how many tables, figures, and photographs will your book contain?
7. Please estimate the length of the manuscript in double-spaced pages of text. (Figures should be counted as one page.)
8. Will the book be an edited volume with chapters written by different contributors?
9. What word-processing program will you use to create the book?
10. How many months will you require to complete the manuscript?
11. Explain briefly your chief publishing requirements and what you envision as necessary for the successful publication and marketing of your book. That is, what marketing do you see as necessary for the book's success?
12. To aid our publishing decision we may commission reviews of your proposal by experts and by people who represent target readers and purchasers. Please list any potential reviewers or readers who might be willing to have a look at the proposal. Include address, phone or E-mail.
